Why Shower Niches End Up in the Wrong Place Even When the Drawing Looked Right

A shower niche is one of the smallest features in a bathroom, yet it is surprisingly easy to get wrong.

On a drawing, it may look perfectly centred.

The dimensions may have been approved.

The builder may have framed exactly what was shown.

Then the tiles go on and suddenly the niche feels too high, too low, too narrow, badly aligned with grout lines, or awkwardly close to the shower rail.

Sometimes it works technically but still annoys the homeowner every day.

The reason is that a shower niche does not belong to just one system.

It belongs to several at once:

  • the wall framing;

  • the waterproofing;

  • the tile module;

  • the user's body;

  • the bottles being stored;

  • the shower rail or mixer;

  • the finished floor level.

If any one of those is planned separately, the niche can look correct on paper and still be wrong in the finished bathroom.

The most useful way to think about it is:

A niche should not be positioned from the unfinished wall. It should be positioned from the finished shower, finished tile layout and actual objects that will live inside it.


The first mistake is choosing the niche height before knowing the finished floor

Imagine the builder frames the bottom of the niche at:

1000 mm above the structural floor.

That sounds clear.

But the finished shower floor may still need:

  • screed;

  • waterproofing;

  • adhesive;

  • tile.

If the finished floor rises by 35 mm, the niche is now effectively:

965 mm above finished floor.

The frame has not moved.

The user reference has.

This is why niche heights should be discussed relative to the finished floor level, not simply the slab, framing or pre-screed floor.

The same principle matters at the top.

If a niche is designed to align with a tile course, the final tile set-out—not the stud framing—should control the visual height.


A 300 mm-high niche is not really 300 mm of storage

This is another common misunderstanding.

Suppose the framed opening is:

600 mm wide × 300 mm high.

After lining, waterproofing, adhesive and tile, the finished opening becomes smaller.

Then add the slope to the bottom shelf.

The usable internal height may be noticeably less than the nominal framed dimension.

That matters because many shower products are taller than people expect.

Large pump bottles can easily be around:

  • 220 mm;

  • 250 mm;

  • sometimes more.

Now imagine a 300 mm nominal niche that finishes with around 260–270 mm of clear internal space.

A tall pump bottle may technically fit, but there may be almost no room above it to press the pump comfortably or lift the bottle out.

The useful question is not:

“Will the bottle fit?”

It is:

“Can the bottle be used and removed comfortably once it is inside?”

That extra working space is what drawings often miss.


The shelf height should follow the objects, not an internet rule

Online bathroom advice often gives a standard niche height.

You may see:

  • 900 mm;

  • 1000 mm;

  • 1200 mm;

  • chest height.

Those numbers are not meaningless, but they are not universal.

A niche used by two adults storing:

  • shampoo;

  • conditioner;

  • body wash;

has a different ideal position from one intended to hold:

  • children's products;

  • razors;

  • soap;

  • a foot-shaving shelf.

The height should reflect how the niche will actually be used.

For a main bottle shelf, I would normally want the user to reach it without:

  • bending deeply;

  • reaching above the shoulder;

  • standing directly under the shower stream.

That last point matters.

A niche can be at a perfectly comfortable height but still be badly positioned if every time the user reaches for shampoo they have to turn into the strongest part of the water spray.

Ergonomics is not just vertical height.

It includes where the body stands.


The shower head can make the “correct” niche position uncomfortable

Consider a simple shower wall.

The niche is centred beautifully beneath the rain head.

The whole wall elevation looks symmetrical.

But during use, the person is standing directly below the water.

To reach the shampoo, they must:

  • step forward;

  • turn;

  • reach through the spray.

The niche is visually centred.

Functionally, it is in the busiest part of the shower.

A niche placed slightly to the side might have looked less symmetrical on the drawing and worked better every day.

This is one of the biggest differences between designing a bathroom elevation and designing a shower for use.

Symmetry is not always the same as convenience.


Then the tile layout arrives and exposes the next problem

A niche is one of the places where poor tile planning becomes very visible.

Suppose the wall uses:

600 × 600 mm tiles.

The niche is framed at:

600 mm wide.

It sounds perfect.

But after:

  • grout joint allowance;

  • tile thickness;

  • waterproofing;

  • lining;

a nominal 600 mm framing opening does not necessarily produce a finished niche that aligns beautifully with one full 600 mm tile.

This is why the niche and tile grid should ideally be set out together.

A recent tiling discussion made exactly this point: the homeowner was planning a niche in a wall using 12 × 24 inch tiles and was already thinking about whether the top or bottom of the niche should line up with the tile courses. One practical suggestion was to dry-layout the tile pattern first and transfer those actual course heights back onto the wall.

That is much better than framing the niche first and asking the tiler to “make the joints work”.


Why grout lines matter more here than on a plain wall

A slightly awkward grout joint on a large plain wall can disappear visually.

Around a niche, the eye sees:

  • four corners;

  • four edges;

  • internal returns;

  • surrounding tile joints.

Any misalignment becomes concentrated around a small architectural feature.

Typical visual problems include:

  • a 40 mm tile sliver above the niche;

  • different-sized cuts on left and right;

  • grout line stopping just short of a corner;

  • niche shelf not aligned with the main horizontal course.

None of these necessarily means the waterproofing or construction has failed.

But they make the niche look improvised.

A well-resolved niche usually begins with:

tile module → grout joints → finished niche position

rather than:

frame opening → tile around whatever is there.


This is why the tiler should see the niche before the carpenter fixes it permanently

On many renovations, the carpenter frames the niche.

Later, the tiler arrives.

That sequence can work if the set-out has already been coordinated.

If it has not, the tiler may discover that moving the niche up by 35 mm would eliminate an ugly tile strip.

But now the wall is:

  • lined;

  • waterproofing work may be underway;

  • plumbing may be nearby.

A very small design adjustment has become expensive.

For highly visible niches, it is worth coordinating the framing position with the actual tile dimensions before the wall is closed.

Especially when using:

  • large-format tiles;

  • strong horizontal patterns;

  • terrazzo;

  • veined stone-look porcelain.


The niche also has to fit between real framing

The wall may already dictate part of the answer.

A desired 600 mm-wide niche does not automatically mean there is a clear 600 mm space behind the lining.

There may be:

  • timber studs;

  • steel studs;

  • bracing;

  • pipes;

  • shower plumbing.

A recent Australian renovation post illustrates this directly: the homeowner wanted a 600 × 300 mm niche centred in a 1000 × 1000 shower but had to deal with the existing steel framing before it could simply be placed where the drawing suggested.

That is an important reality check.

The visible wall is not empty space.


Do not put the niche where the shower plumbing wants to be

One of the easiest ways to complicate a shower wall is to ask too much of the same cavity.

Imagine the same wall contains:

  • concealed mixer;

  • riser rail;

  • shower outlet;

  • water pipes;

  • niche.

Now everyone wants the middle of the wall.

The interior elevation may look clean, but inside the wall there is competition for space.

This can result in:

  • niche shifted sideways;

  • reduced niche depth;

  • awkward plumbing detours;

  • compromised framing;

  • difficult fixing for the shower rail.

A safer strategy is often to decide early which wall is doing which job.

For example:

wet-services wall
mixer, shower outlet, pipes

storage wall
niche

They can be the same wall, but that should be an intentional coordination decision, not a late surprise.


Depth is another dimension that photographs hide

People mostly discuss niche:

  • width;

  • height.

Depth matters just as much.

A shallow niche can fit:

  • soap;

  • small bottles;

but may not fit larger pump bottles securely.

A deeper niche offers more storage but also:

  • reaches farther into the wall cavity;

  • may conflict with services;

  • may require more complicated framing.

External walls can be especially sensitive because the cavity may also be needed for insulation or other building-envelope functions.

A niche should never be treated as a box that can simply be carved out of any wall.


The bottom shelf must drain

This sounds basic, but it is one of the most important construction details.

A niche shelf should not become a tiny bathtub.

Water that reaches the shelf needs to drain back toward the shower.

The bottom surface therefore needs an appropriate fall toward the shower area.

If it is:

  • perfectly level;

  • or worse, falling toward the wall;

water can sit around:

  • grout;

  • silicone;

  • bottle bases.

That creates:

  • soap build-up;

  • staining;

  • slower drying.

The shelf may look perfect in a front photograph while performing badly in real life.

This is one reason niche design cannot be separated from waterproofing and tiling.


Waterproofing becomes more complicated at every corner

A flat shower wall is relatively simple geometrically.

A niche introduces:

  • four internal corners;

  • four front edges;

  • multiple changes of plane;

  • penetrations depending on construction.

Those details need careful waterproofing.

The more complicated the shape, the more junctions must be executed correctly.

This does not mean niches are inherently risky.

It means the feature creates more detailing than a flat wall.

That is why adding three decorative niches where one would have worked is not automatically an improvement.

Every niche adds:

  • waterproofing detail;

  • tile cuts;

  • cleaning surfaces.

Design benefit should justify construction complexity.


One long niche or two smaller niches?

This is one of the more useful real design decisions.

A long horizontal niche can hold many bottles and create a strong architectural line.

But making it long may involve:

  • more framing modification;

  • more waterproofing perimeter;

  • more tile coordination.

Two smaller niches can separate:

  • two users;

  • different product groups.

But they add even more corners.

There is no automatic winner.

The useful question is how much actual storage is required.

Take the products currently sitting in the shower and line them up on a bench.

Measure them.

This is better than estimating storage from Pinterest photographs.

A household may discover it needs:

700 mm of usable shelf length

not because 700 mm is a standard, but because that is what its actual products occupy.

That is an evidence-based niche dimension.


The niche can also become too large

Bigger feels safer during planning.

But an oversized niche can create:

  • a strong dark visual opening;

  • more tiled internal surface to clean;

  • bottles spreading out messily;

  • unnecessary waterproofing complexity.

One Australian homeowner who had recently completed a bathroom said they would make their niche bigger next time—but also noted that it had originally been put in the wrong position. That is a useful combination of feedback: capacity and placement are separate problems.

A bigger niche does not fix a badly located niche.


A shelf can sometimes be better

Niches are fashionable because they look integrated.

But integrated is not always automatically better.

A shelf can sometimes avoid:

  • cutting into framing;

  • sacrificing wall-cavity depth;

  • complicated internal corners.

A 2025 Australian renovation discussion asking homeowners what they would change produced exactly this debate: some owners preferred a shelf over a niche because of simplicity, while others valued the recessed storage.

This is a useful reminder that the niche itself is not the goal.

Accessible shower storage is the goal.

The niche is one possible solution.


A practical way to decide the niche before the wall is closed

This is how I would approach it on a renovation.

First, place the shower controls and shower head.

Not approximately.

Use their actual technical positions.

Then mark where the main user will stand.

Now hold the household's tallest shampoo bottle at different heights on the wall.

Find the position that feels natural to reach without:

  • bending;

  • raising the shoulder;

  • stepping directly under the spray.

At this stage, mark only a provisional shelf height.

Then set out the tiles.

If shifting the shelf 20–40 mm allows the niche edge to align neatly with a full tile course, consider making that adjustment.

Next, open or inspect the framing plan.

Check:

  • studs;

  • bracing;

  • water pipes;

  • electrical services.

Only after those relationships work together should the final framed opening be fixed.

This method starts from use and finishes with construction.

Not the other way around.


A representative failure: technically centred, practically awkward

Imagine a shower wall 1000 mm wide.

The designer specifies:

600 × 300 mm niche

centred horizontally.

It looks balanced.

The shower rail is later installed just to the right.

Because the niche is centred, the rail is squeezed between the niche and the screen.

The shower hose hangs partly in front of the niche.

Every time the user reaches for shampoo, the hose is in the way.

Nothing is incorrectly built.

The problem is that the niche was centred to the wall, rather than coordinated with the equipment that would share the wall.

Moving it 150 mm left might have produced a less symmetrical elevation and a much better shower.


Another failure: the niche fitted the bottles but not the tile

Suppose the desired clear niche height is roughly 300 mm.

The wall uses 600 mm-high tiles.

The niche is framed without tile set-out.

Once the tiler establishes the floor level and tile courses, the niche falls across an awkward part of the grid.

The result requires:

  • a narrow tile strip beneath;

  • another cut above.

Had the niche moved upward by 40 mm, one edge might have aligned neatly with a grout joint.

This is not primarily a tiling mistake.

It is a sequencing mistake.


What I would write on the wall before framing the niche

Not just:

Niche 600 × 300

I would want something closer to:

Finished internal opening: ___ × ___
Bottom shelf above finished floor: ___
Tile course at bottom: ___
Tile course at top: ___
Tallest stored bottle: ___
Shower rail clear: yes / no
Pipework behind: checked
Finished shelf fall: toward shower

That description is much harder to misunderstand.


The final test is not whether it looks good empty

A newly completed niche is usually photographed empty.

That is the least demanding moment of its life.

The useful test is to fill it with:

  • shampoo;

  • conditioner;

  • body wash;

  • cleanser;

  • razor;

  • soap.

Then imagine the bottles wet.

Can you:

  • reach them;

  • pump them;

  • lift them;

  • clean behind them;

  • drain the shelf?

If yes, the niche is doing its job.

If not, a beautifully aligned grout joint does not rescue it.


Final Thought

A shower niche seems like a small decorative detail because that is how we usually see it in photographs.

In reality, it is a miniature construction project inside the shower wall.

Its position depends on:

  • the finished floor;

  • user reach;

  • bottle height;

  • shower equipment;

  • wall framing;

  • waterproofing;

  • tile set-out.

That is why “put the niche at 1000 mm” is not very useful advice by itself.

The more useful sequence is:

Decide what needs to go inside it, where the user naturally reaches, how the tile grid falls, and what the wall contains—then set the niche position.

A niche that is 30 mm higher or 100 mm off-centre may look less mathematically perfect on the drawing.

But if it lines up with the tile, clears the shower rail, drains properly and is easier to reach, it is usually the better design.
