Firefighters working to rescue person from Shelby County trench

First responders recovered the body of a 54-year-old working at a construction site in the 12000 block of McGregor Road.

SHELBY COUNTY, Indiana — Firefighters said a 54-year-old man who fell into a hole at a construction site in Shelby County on Sunday died.

Firefighters from Shelbyville, Indianapolis and Moral Township were working on a trench rescue around 4 p.m. in the 12000 block of McGregor Road.

According to the Shelbyville Fire Department, crews were working to build warehouses at a job site in the area when, at around 3:13 p.m., firefighters were called to rescue someone trapped in a trench.

The Indianapolis Fire Department said the victim as a supervisor, standing on the edge of a recently dug trench when it gave way. Workers jumped in to try and get him out, but they couldn’t reach him and the conditions were too unsafe.

Several hours after firefighters began operations, the victim was located about 19 feet down. Firefighters had difficulty removing the compacted clay and soil from around the man as underground water continued to backfill the hole and further compressed the material.

The man has not been identified pending notification of family members.
