How to start a home renovation project: Mom Squad expert advice

During the pandemic, a lot of families discovered they need more space. Homeowners are looking to renovate, but at what cost? HGTV star and contractor breaks it down

CLEVELAND — Real estate app Zillow found 46 percent of homeowners are considering or undertaking a home renovation project. In today’s Mom Squad, we talk to Darren Mancuso of Mancuso Homes about whether remodeling is right for you, the actual costs and the trends he’s seeing from his clients who want more space. His beautiful renovations landed him a show on HGTV known as Relief Properties.

First, let’s talk kitchens. Those are the most coveted remodeled spaces, but people often get sticker shock when they price out a remodel.

“I think that there are definitely some kitchens that you could do for $50,000, no doubt,” says Mancuso. “I think the kitchens that our clients want, though, are more in the $100,000 range. You know, we’re taking walls out, we’re opening things up, so I would say, you know, without saying specific numbers I would say $100,000 is more [realistic].”

The price for materials has gone up since the COVID pandemic along with shipping and supply chain issues. If you are going to remodel, keep in mind it will take longer for your materials to arrive.

“We could just count on getting appliances with a two-week lead time,” Mancuso says of the past. “So now, kitchen cabinets, windows, appliances, those types of things, the minute we know that we’re doing the project, we’re ordering those things right out of the gate.”

Mancuso says his clients are looking for home office spaces, too, but also a big trend is master suites. Homeowners are looking to add on glamour baths, walk-in closets and other amenities to make their master suite an oasis.
